Not only is the application process exhausting and your confidence not quite where you’d like it to be, you have no idea what this next phase of your life is going to be like. If you’re an ambitious, career-focused college student, you probably have had internships on your mind lately. You might have even spent spring break frantically submitting your resume to company after company on LinkedIn. 

At this point, internships have become an expectation for many employers. If you’re looking to get a full-time job in the environmental field upon graduating, you’ll need at least a little “real-world” experience. The good news is many organizations, big and small, are willing to take a chance on interns! 

Here are our tips on how to get started on the internship search:

1. Don’t Procrastinate 

I know, I sound like every parent, professor, and college counselor out there. Although it’s not novel advice, you won’t get an internship unless you make time to search and apply. All too often, internship hunting is pushed to the back burner — not because of laziness, but because work from your classes...

Getting your environmental degree most likely means you’ll need to complete at least one internship. One the one hand it seems exciting to have hands-on experience, on the other hand, it can be scary. Procrastination is one of the worst things you can do because of the good internships, the ones that pay or are at the local aquarium, go fast. Waiting until the final hour also increases your stress because you’ll get more rejections and feel like you’re running out of options.

Here are three things you can do to rest assured that the internship is coming:

1. Start looking early. The best time to start looking is now, even if you don’t need the internship until next year or another semester. Starting early will allow you to start networking in the right places (see #2). It wouldn’t hurt to ask if you can get on the waitlist for popular programs more than a semester out.

Anytime you go through a transition in life emotions and challenges come with them. Major life transitions include parent's divorcing, moving out of your parent's house, moving long-distances, family deaths, and graduating from college, and entering the wonderful world of taking care of yourself an adult. In any of these cases staying finding ways to stay positive makes a huge difference in your stress levels at that time. In the case of graduating with your degree and then turning to the job search momentum is a key factor in staying positive. As a student, you’re understandably focused on grades and trudging through classes your not even sure why you have to take them. The problem is that your university might also only be concerned with your grades and not your post-graduation success.

The number one thing that people looking for their first environmental career tell me is that they don’t feel qualified to work, even in the entry-level jobs they are applying to. It's also very common for recent grads to turn to coaching after the pressure to get a job increases or they’ve gotten a job only to discover it isn’t going to lead to their dream career and there is a lot more paper pushing than they had expected. The best thing you can do for yourself while you are still in school and to make sure to protect the investment you’ve made in time, energy, and money to get that degree is to start figuring things out now!
